All Updates Of 2026 Regarding Taxation

ALL UPDATES 2026:-

JANUARY UPDATES

In January 2026, an important update was announced for businesses that file GSTR-3B late. The GST portal improved its interest calculation system to consider the eligible balance already available in the Electronic Cash Ledger.

For example, suppose a business has a GST liability of Rs.1,00,000 and already has Rs.40,000 in its eligible cash ledger balance. Under the applicable conditions, interest may be calculated on the remaining Rs.60,000 instead of the full amount.

The GST portal also introduced improvements in automatic interest calculation and reporting of tax liabilities from previous months. These changes help accountants reduce calculation mistakes.

February Updates

1. Changes in Tobacco GST Rates

From 1 February 2026, GST on pan masala and certain tobacco products increased from 28% to 40%. Compensation cess was also removed for specified products. These changes affected businesses dealing in the notified tobacco categories.

2. New GST Valuation Rules

Special RSP-based valuation rules became applicable to notified tobacco products. Instead of calculating GST only on the normal transaction value, businesses must follow the prescribed retail sale price-based method.

The government introduced a new GST valuation rule for certain tobacco products, including pan masala, cigarettes and other notified tobacco items. Under CGST Rule 31D, GST is calculated based on the product's Retail Sale Price (RSP or MRP) using a prescribed formula, instead of simply using its actual selling price.

3. Changes in ITC Adjustment

On 19 February 2026, GSTN clarified that businesses could use eligible CGST or SGST ITC in either order to pay IGST liability, after completely using their IGST credit. This facility applies from the February 2026 return period.

4. Rule 14A Withdrawal Facility

On 21 February 2026, the GST portal introduced a facility for eligible taxpayers to apply for withdrawal from the special registration procedure under Rule 14A. This helps qualifying businesses move out of that procedure by following the prescribed conditions.

5. GST Changes Proposed in Union Budget 2026

The Union Budget 2026 included proposals to simplify GST refunds, credit-note adjustments and certain compliance procedures. These proposals were intended to reduce difficulties for businesses, but their legal effective dates must be checked separately.
